Dmitri Yurovsky will take the conductor’s stand in The Queen of Spades

Within the Russian opera festival Slovtsov. Postscriptum, the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre will present the Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera The Queen of Spades on April 12 and 13. Dmitri Yurovsky will take the conductor's stand at both shows.

Dmitri Yurovski - the youngest member of the famous musical dynasty - was a successful cellist at the beginning of his musical career. In 2003, he began to study conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin (Higher School of Music). And he has achieved success in it, too: he has performed as an opera and symphony conductor in leading theatres in Europe and on the American continent. Dmitri often visits Russian cultural venues to participate in various projects. In the autumn of 2015, Yurovsky became Chief Conductor of the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (NOVAT). Since 2021, he’s been Artistic Director of this theatre.

Under the music direction of Dmitri Yurovsky, the premieres of the following operas and ballets were held at he NOVAT: Boris Godunov by Mussorgsky, Turandot and Tosca by Puccini, Aida, Falstaff, Un Ballo in Maschera by Bizet, L’Elisir d’Amore by Donizetti, Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini, Iolanta, Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, The Snow Maiden, Kashchey the Immortal by Rimsky-Korsakov, Die Zauberflöte by Mozart, Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev, and others.

In 2016, the premiere of the production The Queen of Spades. Game to the music by Tchaikovsky directed by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev took place in Novosibirsk; Dmitri Yurovsky was its artistic director and conductor.

Among the events of the season of 2022 and 2023, there are the maestro’s performances along with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, the Svetlanov State Orchestra of Russia, and the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as the premieres of the new productions of The Tsar's Bride by Rimsky-Korsakov and The Taming of the Shrew by Vissarion Shebalin in Novosibirsk.

Dmitri Yurovsky has already conducted The Queen of Spades in Krasnoyarsk within the international festival Stars Parade at the Opera dedicated to Dmitri Hvorostovsky (2018).

“I believe that The Queen of Spades is the performance that must be visited more than once in a lifetime; this is the work that makes any music theatre a theatre. It’s an alloy of dramatic action and amazing music. That night, a spectator will experience such emotions that he or she won’t soon forget it. We have absolutely fantastic soloists: some of them work at the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, some come from the Bolshoi Theatre and Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. All the show participants form one strong entity called “Opera,” Dmitri Yurovsky commented.
