The Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre scheduled the premiere of Vincenzo Bellini's opera I Capuleti ei Montecchi for April 2022. However, Krasnoyarsk residents have an opportunity to visit its avant-premiere very soon: December 5, 2021.
Guests of the theatre will be able to get acquainted with the opera itself and its beautiful melodies on that Sunday night, as well as with the creators of the production, performers, and with the vocal style of bel canto widely used in this opera written in 1830. This is also the story of Romeo and Juliet, but not Shakespeare’s version: the librettist Felice Romani based the libretto on a short story by the Italian writer of the 16th century Matteo Bandello. Romeo in Bellini's opera is not a young man but an experienced warrior, the commander-in-chief of the Montague troops, but in the centre of the plot, there is the love of two representatives of the warring gangs, the love doomed to a tragic ending.
The event to take place on December 5 in Krasnoyarsk will consist of two parts. The first one will present the opera itself as a presentation of a series of the brightest musical and vocal fragments with the participation of soloists performing the roles of the protagonists. The opera will not be performed in full; still, it will be impressive: there will be costumes, sets, and an orchestra in the show.
In the second part after a short intermission, the meet-the-artist event with director Elizaveta Korneeva and the performers will take place; during the face-to-face communication, spectators will learn more about what they have just seen and heard, as well as about the upcoming premiere. The special guest of the event is baritone Ivan Markov, soloist of the Natalya Sats Moscow State Academic Children’s Music Theatre. Without any complicated musicological semantics, he will understandably talk about the bel canto style.
Elizaveta Korneeva has significant experience with this music material: she has already staged Bellini's opera I Capuleti ei Montecchi at the Moscow House of Music in February 2020: the performance received nominations for the Onegin Prize in two categories - Event and Debut (2020). It also was the opening performance of the 5th Festival of Russian Music Theatres “See Music” in Moscow. However, a completely new version of the production will be introduced in Krasnoyarsk.
