Composer Pyotr Pospelov has passed away

Pyotr Pospelov, a composer, music critic, educator, cultural and public figure suddenly died. In 2023, he won the National Theatre Award Golden Mask in the category Best Composer for the orchestral reconstruction of the ballet Catarina ou la Fille du Bandit by Cesare Pugni he staged for the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. Pyotr Glebovich was only 60 years old.

Pyotr Pospelov received an all-round education: he graduated from the Theoretical and Composing Faculty of the Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory, studied vocal at the Prokofiev Music School and electro-acoustic composition at the Theremin Centre). He was successfully engaged in various cultural activities.

He worked in the catalogue department of the music library of the Moscow Conservatory; he was a screenwriter, director, cinematographer of versatile films and videos. For many years, he had worked in culture departments of various Russian mass media (Kommersant, Russky Telegraf, Izvestia, Russian Journal, Afisha, Expert, Vedomosti) as a music columnist, critic, and editor. Pospelov wrote more than one and a half thousand articles on opera, symphonic and chamber music, modern academic music; they are profoundly written, lively, witty. He managed the Long-Term Planning Department at the Bolshoi Theatre. Since 2018, he had been the chief editor of the Kompozitor publishing house.

In 1992, Pyotr Pospelov founded the creative and production association Kompozitor - it was a collective pseudonym under which he wrote music in collaboration with other authors.
Since 2010, he had been working under his own name. Among his compositions are Petya and the Wolf 2 (a sequel to the Sergei Prokofiev's music fairy tale), the operas Journey to the Land of Jumblies and The Pirate's Grandson, the cantata The Pearl Seekers in the Yauza, The Appeal for orchestra, compositions for ensemble, vocal compositions, music for films.

Pyotr Pospelov used to be an expert and jury member of several awards and competitions including the National Theatre Award Golden Mask. In 2023, he himself won this prestigious award for his work on the music for the ballet Catarina ou la Fille du Bandit. The lost original score of Cesare Pugni was collected bit by bit, and Pyotr Glebovich combined the survived fragments and music pieces written by Pugni into a single fully-featured ballet.

“I myself write the same music as Pugni. My style is about the same as his - you may take any work and compare. I didn’t have to change my ways. I absolutely fused with Pugni. I do not tend to oppose modern music to classical one. All music exists in time compression mode. And the music evolution was compressed into one large “Today”. Therefore, I did not experience any contradictions in working with Pugni's music,” Pyotr Pospelov said about his work on the ballet that was subsequently highly appreciated by both the public and theatre experts.

The team of the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre expresses their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Pyotr Glebovich Pospelov.
