A.J. Weissbard

A.J. Weissbard is an artist who designs with light and space to create work internationally for theater, opera, dance, video, exhibitions, permanent architectural installation, special events, and fashion. His collaborations include projects with Robert Wilson, Peter Stein, Luca Ronconi, Marina Abramovic, Bernard Sobel, Peter Greenaway, William Kentridge, David Cronenberg, Andriy Zholdak, Shirin Neshat, Gae Aulenti, Fabio Novembre, Tim Yip, Richard Gluckman, Matteo Thun, William Ivey Long, Giorgio Armani, Hugo Boss, Ermenegildo Zegna‎, Anthony, CocoRosie, and the Martha Graham Dance Company. Throughout nearly three decades in the arts, his work has been developed and presented in major opera houses, festivals, theaters, museums, and other sites, in more than 50 countries across the globe.

 

His recent projects include Letter to a Man by Robert Wilson, Armani / Silos, the stage and light design for King Kandaules at the Vlaanderen Opera in Antwerp, for Carmen at the Opera of Montpellier, and for Mikhail Barishnikov’s Don Quixote at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

 

His work for the opera Eugene Onegin was awarded Russia’s 2014 Golden Mask for best lighting design for musical theater; he received the first IFSArts award for Lighting Design achievement; his recent opera production of Faust in Riga directed by Aik Karapetian won the Great Music award for best musical production in 2016.

 

In addition to teaching and lecturing at numerous academic institutions and universities around the world, he served four years as Program Director of the Watermill Summer Program guiding scores of young artists and producing hundreds of events and projects.
