“Requiem” by Verdi. Dedicated to Dmitri Hvorostovsky

In the lead-up to the IX international festival “Stars Parade in the Opera” dedicated to the memory of our great townsman Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the Bolshoi Theatre’s soloists will perform one of the most outstanding works by Giuseppe Verdi - “Requiem”.

The main roles will be sung by People's artists of Russia Irina Dolzhenko and Oleg Kulko, Honoured Artist of Russia Mikhail Kazakov and Anna Nechayeva. At varying times these singers were lucky to have known the artist of genius Dmitri Hvorostovsky, some of them used to go on stage along with him. Now these artists will come to Krasnoyarsk where the Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s career began, in order to pay the tribute to the memory of the talented singer. Maestro from the USA Sergei Khanukaev will conduct the orchestra at the performance.

“Requiem” by Verdi is not often performed nowadays - not many theatres have this complex work on its repertoire. The complexity and scale of the work is so massive it requires a conductor, soloist and orchestra’s symbiosis of talent and a synergy of effort. Every performance of its becomes a landmark event in the world of arts. Nowadays “Requiem” is only performed in the best opera theatres - La Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Teatro Real in Madrid, Covent Garden. On February 2, Krasnoyarsk citizens have a crucial chance to listen to the live performance.

“Requiem” by Verdi is a unique work. This is the only composer’s large work that isn’t an opera but still is known as the most theatrical embodiment of a traditional ecclesiastic funeral service. It doesn’t sound like mourning dirge but reminds of human mortality drama. The four soloists personify four archetypes different from themselves - archetypes of different life paths that lead them to the final hours of their existence.

The performance begins at 7 p.m.
