The Theatre Night’s guests will get the opportunity to have a look at the other side of the Quadrat

The Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre invites art amateurs to visit the annual popular event - the Theatre Night. It’ll take place on March 14. This year it’s dedicated to the Art at the Quadrat project and its name is On the Other Side of the Quadrat.

In the 42nd season, the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre is looking for new forms and exploring new spaces along with its audience. Several opera premiere performances have already been presented at the Quadrat venue - Les Mamelles de Tirésias by Francis Poulenc, Marevo (Haze) by Kirill Shirokov and Mark Buloshnikov, A Feast in Time of Plague by Alexander Manotskov, Night at the Museum by Peter Pospelov. Les Mamelles de Tirésias performance directed by Sergei Bobrov received 4 nominations for the Golden Mask Award.

To immerse spectators in the mystical transition from classical opera to contemporary art, the directors decided to... close the theatre (not literally, of course!) and populate it with the Opera House ghosts - the ghosts of performances, singers and even spectators. The music will come from the non-musical sounds of everyday life - knocks of hammers, the sound of glass, furniture creaks. These will be quotes from the performances at the Quadrat, as well as the events of the Art Cafe project - the operas The Medium by Menotti and Don Pasquale by Donizetti, the concerts and performances Femmes Fatales and Musical Operatifs. Moving from location to location, spectators will see the most exciting, spectacular and mysterious opera excerpts.

At the end, the ghosts of classical operas will reveal their secrets to the audience, introducing their stories in unusual contemporary forms.

“We will try to show the hidden side of art, the birth of contemporary musical material. To reach this goal, we will turn the theatre into a closed museum or even a castle with a fascinating history inhabited by ghosts. The audience will actually see not the opera itself, but quotes from theatrical life. And at the end, the lifeless theatre hall covered with a white cloth will be transformed in one magic movement: the capes will disappear from the seats and the space will get filled with life. The guests will see and hear the stories of theatrical spirits. The final highlight will be the performance of the famous fragments of the world classical opera -  Habanera of Carmen, the Duke’s song of Rigoletto, "Fly Away on the Wings of the Wind" song from Prince Igor - performed to beatboxing. This is how classics meet modernity, masterpieces of the past meet the art of the present times”, said the director of the On the Other Side of the Quadrat night event Elizaveta Korneyeva.
