The tour of the Mariinsky Theatre’s Primorsky Stage continues at the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre with Gaetano Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, scheduled for June 3 and 4. These performances follow two ballet evenings (The Little Humpbacked Horse and Phaedra. The Firebird), marking the beginning of the opera portion of the touring programme.
Donizetti’s bel canto masterpiece Don Pasquale is already familiar to Krasnoyarsk audiences. Now, they'll have the opportunity to experience a fresh directorial interpretation. The original production premiered at the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre (now the Mariinsky) in 1980, directed by Yuri Alexandrov. The staging was revived in 2022 by Ilya Ustyantsev, and its debut at the Primorsky Stage took place in September 2024. The music director of the production is Honoured Artist of Russia Irina Soboleva, Artistic Director of the Primorsky Stage opera company. In Krasnoyarsk, the orchestra will be conducted by Serbian-born Dušan Vilić, conductor of the Primorsky Stage.
Don Pasquale is a sparkling comedy in the tradition of Italian commedia dell’arte, telling the story of an aging aristocrat who suddenly decides to marry. A clever and somewhat ruthless scheme by the younger generation quickly cures him of this romantic folly, offering a humorous—and painful—lesson in the "joys" of married life with a shrewish wife. Donizetti’s vibrant music breathes life into the characters, inviting both sympathy and laughter at the misadventures of the miserly old bachelor.
The tour is part of the federal Big Tours programme supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Krasnoyarsk Region and organized by ROSCONCERT as part of the Russian Touring and Concert Plan of the Russian Ministry of Culture.
