Opera and ballet music to fill the city on World Theatre Day
On March 27, the world celebrates World Theatre Day. To mark the occasion, the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre has prepared an ambitious citywide programme spanning key locations — from the railway station to the international airport, as well as public spaces and transport. All events are free to attend.
Celebrations will begin on March 26 at 12 PM with a concert by opera soloists at Krasnoyarsk’s main railway station. The programme features beloved classics including the Flower Duet from Lakmé by Léo Delibes, the Duke’s Aria from Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, Escamillo’s Toreador Song from Carmen by Georges Bizet, and Fly Away on the Wings of the Wind from Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin. The concert will conclude with a selection of well-loved Soviet-era popular songs familiar to several generations.
On March 27 at 10 AM, the musical journey continues at the arrivals concourse of the Krasnoyarsk International Airport. The venue is symbolic—the airport is named after Dmitri Hvorostovsky—and the programme will feature arias and duets from Lakmé, Carmen, and The Le Nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
At 9 AM, 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM, and 9 PM on March 27, the city’s main clock will congratulate residents with the famous Fly Away chorus from Prince Igor performed by principal soloist Alexandra Cherpakova. For the third year in a row, with the support of the city administration, this musical greeting has become a cherished tradition bringing operatic classics into everyday urban life.
This year, opera will quite literally “step out into the city.” On March 27, audio greetings from the theatre’s artists will be heard across a wide range of venues including the Siberian Federal University, Krasnoyarsk State Agrarian University, city schools, the Surikov Art College, the Planeta Shopping Mall, the Roev Ruchey Zoo, Tatyshev Island, Krasgorpark, as well as at facilities of RUSAL and RusHydro, and even in the Kolizey fitness club network.
In addition, from March 23 to 31, passengers on several bus routes and trolleybus line No. 6 will enjoy specially curated music playlists during their journeys.
“For us, World Theatre Day is not just a professional holiday, but an opportunity to break the stereotype that opera belongs only on stage and in the auditorium,” says Theatre's Chief Executive Svetlana Guziy. “We deliberately bring it into the city to share this celebration with people. It’s a kind of experiment—one that has already proven successful—in creating a unified cultural space. It’s inspiring to see leading companies and public venues respond so enthusiastically, showing that classical music can unite not only audiences in a theatre, but entire urban communities.”
