Orchestra Formula reveals the Soul of the Double Bass
A new themed concert from the Orchestra Formula series, titled The Soul of the Double Bass, will take place on April 26 in the foyer of the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre. The programme is dedicated to the largest and lowest-pitched instrument of the orchestra — the double bass.
The concert will feature works for solo double bass with piano, various string ensembles, and even a piece for four double basses—Suite for Four Double Basses by Colin Brumby. Performers include orchestra soloists Apas Sadykov, Farida Abdulaeva, Timofey Bukhmiller, and Svetlana Primak.
The programme highlights Russian composers including Igor Stravinsky (Pulcinella, a piece for two double basses) and renowned Soviet bassist Serge Koussevitzky (Concerto for Double Bass and Piano). Audiences will also hear instrumental favourites such as the Romance from the musical illustrations to The Blizzard by Georgy Sviridov and the romance from the film The Gadfly by Dmitri Shostakovich performed here in a string quintet arrangement featuring the double bass.
The show will also feature works by international composers from different eras—from Johann Sebastian Bach to Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel, including the famous tango Por Una Cabeza from the film Scent of a Woman.
A special highlight of the concert will be a jazz arrangement of a well-known piece by Johann Sebastian Bach. Performed by members of the theatre’s chamber orchestra conducted by Dmitri Kosolapov, the concert promises a vibrant and unexpected musical surprise.
