The Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre welcomed one of Russia’s most renowned vocal coaches, Dmitri Vdovin — Honoured Artist of Russia and head of the Young Artists Opera Programme at the Bolshoi Theatre. From June 17 to 19, he led a series of masterclasses for the Theatre’s opera company.
Both emerging and seasoned soloists had the opportunity to work with Vdovin, including Nikita Gusmanov, Violetta Grishko, Edward Arutyunyan, Viktoria Maslyukova, Aldar Dampilov, Alexandra Cherpakova, Vladimir Lebedev, Anna Avakyan, Elena Nikutina, Daria Frolova, Aliona Zafran, Yuri Zabolotnov, Andrey Kolobov, Kirill Pankevich, Aliona Babivskaya, Denis Grechishkin, and Sevastian Martyniuk.
Dmitri Vdovin received his education at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow, where he later completed postgraduate studies in theatre criticism under Professor Inna Solovyova. He then graduated from the Popov Academy of Choral Arts, where he eventually taught and chaired the Faculty of Solo Singing. He further trained as a vocal coach at the European Centre for Opera and Vocal Art in Belgium. He has also led the vocal department of the Gnessin State Musical College and taught at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music.
Vdovin has conducted masterclasses across Russia and internationally in the USA, Mexico, Italy, Canada, Latvia, France, and Poland. He is frequently invited to judge prestigious vocal competitions including the Mikhail Glinka International Vocal Competition, the Russian Music Competition, the Gian Battista Viotti International Music Competition (Italy), international competitions in Paris and Bordeaux, the Competizione dell’Opera, the Montreal International Competition (Canada), and the TV competition Big Opera hosted by the Kultura Channel, among many others.
Since 2009, he has served as director of the Young Artists Opera Programme at the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia. His students have gone on to win major competitions and perform leading roles at some of the world’s foremost opera houses including the Bolshoi Theatre, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the Paris National Opera, Madrid’s Royal Theatre, and many others.
