The winners of the competition of the Opera House reconstruction design are announced

The Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre completed the qualifying round of the competition of architectural and urban concept for the reconstruction of the Theatre’s building and the development of the adjacent area. The competition is supported by the Norilsk Nickel company.

The  representatives of the jury held a press conference; among them were Chief Architect of the Krasnoyarsk Region Konstantin Shumov (chairman of the jury) and Managing Director of the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre Svetlana Guziy, as well as deputy director of the Norilsk Nickel company Igor Astapov and director of the operating competition City Institute Alexei Nikolaev. They told about the results of the competition, the projects of the winners, architectural inventions, further stages of preparation for the reconstruction.

The competition started in December 2022 and received 34 applications. 10 architectural companies and consortiums from Krasnoyarsk, Moscow, and St. Petersburg made it to the final. The expert council and the jury chose the three winners of them:

  • The limited liability company Vauhaus (Moscow) - 1st place;
  • The limited liability company Architectural Bureau Studio 44 (St. Petersburg) - 2nd place;
  • The consortium design bureau A2 + MVP (Krasnoyarsk and Moscow) - 3rd place.

The cash prize for the winner is 1.5 million roubles, 1 million is provided for 2nd place, and 500 thousand - for 3rd place.

As Konstantin Shumov said, a working group of experts will be created in the near future to summarize the project ideas not only of the winning company but also of other competing participants, and study the possibilities of their implementation. After that, an updated terms of reference for the development of a draft design will be approved. Until the end of April, the final draft design - the embodiment of the concept that will form the basis of the updated look of the Theatre and the surrounding area will be discussed with the winning company.

“Selecting the winners of the competition required a huge amount of work. It turned out to be very difficult to make a choice because almost all the participants of the competition were very close to our terms of reference. I hope that in 2028 when Krasnoyarsk turns 400 years old and our Theatre turns 50, we will be able to open a renovated building,” Svetlana Guziy commented.
