Yuliana Malkhasyants stages the choreography for Leo Delibes opera Lakme

Honoured Artist of Russia Yuliana Malkhasyants again works with the team of the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre: she’s staging dance episodes and scenic movements of artists in the opera Lakme by Leo Delibes.

Yuliana Gennadievna is the author of music dramaturgy and production choreographer of the large-scale premiere, which took place in November 2021 - the ballet Catarina ou la Fille du Bandit to the music of Cesare Pugni. In the opera Lakme, she worked not only with ballet dancers but also with opera soloists (performers of the part of Lakme) and choir singers.

“Leo Delibes conceived a whole cycle of ballet pieces for this opera having created music for the ballet divertissement. As a result of in-depth discussion with the conductor and director, we decided to only stage three ballet pieces in our performance: Terana (dancers leaving the temple), Persian dance (based on real Indian postures and gestures in the market scene), and a spectacular dance coda - a powerful dance on a town square with the participation of the choir. I also had to stage dance movements of the choir and work with opera soloists - to get them acquainted with the culture of Mudra. It’s a symbolic or ritual gesture or poses in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism: we use it in the famous bell aria of Lakme. It was a new and interesting experience for me: after taking several masterclasses, I had to learn Indian dances for this production. To create something new, you must first get hold of the material. And I did it.” Yuliana Malkhasyants said.

Premiere shows of the opera Lakme will take place at the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre in early spring - March 1, 2, 3, and 4.
