I Capuleti e i Montecchi: guest artists invited to Krasnoyarsk in October

On October 6, Vincenzo Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi will be performed at the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. Maestro Artiom Makarov will again take to the conductor’s stand; bass singer Artur Kaipkulov is going to perform the role of Capellio Capuleti.

Both artists work at the State Bashkir Opera and Ballet Theatre (Artiom is the Theatre's chief conductor, Artur is the soloist of its opera company) and both have the title of People's Artist of the Republic of Bashkortostan. They are already known to Krasnoyarsk opera lovers, for they took part in the premiere performances of the opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi in May 2022.

Artiom Makarov is music director and conductor of the Krasnoyarsk production of the Bellini's opera. He was born n in Ufa. He graduated from the Ismagilov Ufa Institute of Arts with honours. In 1997, while a student, he began working as an accompanist of the opera company at the Bashkir Opera and Ballet Theatre; in 2002 he joined its team as a conductor.

Artiom Makarov is currently Chief Conductor of this theatre. He has taken part in all the performances staged there for 20 years. He was the first in Ufa to stage the operas Così Fan Tutte, Ossia La Scuola Degli Amanti by Mozart, Hercules by Handel, Carmen by Bizet, as well as operettas by Lehar and Offenbach, national Bashkir operas Salavat Yulaev by Zagir Ismagilov and Geometry of Life by Salavat Nizametdinov. In 2017, he won the Russian National Theatre Award Golden Mask in the Best Opera Conductor category for the opera Hercules. For several years, he has combined his activities in the Ufa Theatre with his work at the State Opera of Antalya (Turkey) as its music director, where he staged Mozart's opera Don Giovanni. In 2016, he was one of the establishers of the 1st Chaliapin International Vocal Competition in Ufa.

Artiom Makarov had previously thought about staging the opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi; so, when director Elizaveta Korneeva invited him to join the production team, he readily agreed.

The artistic journey of Artur Kaipkulov is closely connected with Ufa. He graduated from the Ismagilov Ufa State Academy of Arts. While a student, he joined the opera company of the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre. Besides roles in operas by European and Russian composers, his repertoire includes the Bashkir national operas - Salavat Yulaev and Kodasa by Zagir Ismagilov. Artur is not only Honoured and People's Artist of Bashkortostan, but also a winner and diploma laureate of numerous international and Russian competitions.

Artur Kaipkulov performed the role of Capellio Capuleti for the first time in Krasnoyarsk on May 18; now, it has been included in the singer's repertoire.
