The musical drama Lord of the Flies, presented by the Natalia Sats Moscow State Children's Music Theatre, will be performed at the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre on June 18. This one-time performance is part of the federal touring programme Big Tours.
The music was composed by Efrem Podgaits to a libretto by Russian children's writer, poet, and playwright Lev Yakovlev, based on one of the most renowned and complex philosophical novels by Nobel Prize laureate William Golding. The music director and conductor is Konstantin Khvatynets, and the stage director is Valery Merkulov, a laureate of the Russian Government Prize.
The production is based on the eponymous novel by Golding, which explores the behavior of a group of boys stranded on a deserted island. These adolescents, longing for independence and chafing under adult supervision, find themselves unexpectedly alone—no grown-ups, no rules. Finally, they're free! But they soon discover that true independence in extreme conditions is far more difficult than they imagined. They must choose: to become the leader of an obedient pack, or to remain truly human—facing challenges and making mature, often painful decisions.
Including such a thought-provoking work in the theatre’s repertoire was a bold move—but one that paid off. The result is a powerful, dynamic, and emotionally resonant production. In 2009, Lord of the Flies received the Russian Government Prize in the field of culture.
The tour of the Natalia Sats Moscow State Children's Music Theatre was made possible through the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Krasnoyarsk Region and the federal Big Tours programme, organized by ROSCONCERT within the Russian Touring and Concert Plan of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
